Greece Car Hire Destination Guide

Car hire popular in Greece and is available from all the major car rental companies. Greece attracts well over 16 million tourists a year and has been an attraction for international visitors since antiquity for its rich and long history and more recently for its glorious Mediterranean coastline and beaches.

Although Greece has always been a popular tourist destination, It had been criticised many times for lagging behind other Western European nations in terms of tourism infrastructures and amenities. This improved however following the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Driving in Greece
If you’re planning to rent a car while in Greece there’s some basic information you’re going to need to get you on your way. Firstly, and quite importantly if you’re British, get ready to drive on the right hand side of the road. That’s the wrong side if you’re British! This means you should always overtake on the left.

Another car flashing its headlights at you generally means 'move over, I'm coming through'.

Local Laws
It is compulsory to carry a first aid kit, fire extinguisher and warning triangle.

It is illegal to carry a can of petrol in a vehicle.

It is illegal to use a horn at any time in towns apart from warning of danger.

Speed Limits
The common speed limits are 30mph in built up areas, 60mph out of town, and on motorways it’s 70mph. interestingly the same as the UK.

Drink Driving
As with most other European countries drink driving is heavily frowned upon in Greece and the limit is very low (currently 50mg) which is less than 1 unit of alcohol, so it’s not worth taking any risks.

Parking
A vehicle parked at night on a public road must have the rear red light clearly illuminated.
