Ireland Car Hire Destination Guide

Car hire is widely available throughout the Ireland from all the major car rental companies. Ireland's scenery is the biggest attraction for visitors who can also enjoy traditional hospitality in lively towns and the hustle and bustle of Dublin, Galway and Cork. The Dingle Peninsula, Ring of Kerry and the Connemara and Donegal coasts are firm favourites.

The beaches around the south-east coast are best for swimming and the unsheltered western coast is great for surfers. Try visiting in June or September when it is less crowded and easier to get around.

Driving in Ireland
If you’re planning to rent a car while in Ireland there’s some basic information you’re going to need to get you on your way. Like the neighbouring United Kingdom the Irish drive on the left hand side of the road.

This is different to most other countries so could take some getting used to. This means that you should always overtake vehicles on the right, and give priority to traffic coming from the right at roundabouts (traffic islands).

The 'give way' signs are red triangles with the point at the bottom and the words 'yield right of way' or 'geill sli'. Fog lights must only be used in fog or falling snow.

You must not use a horn between 11pm and 7am.

Speed Limits
The common speed limits are 30mph in built up areas, 60mph out of town, and on motorways it’s 70mph. interestingly the same as the UK.

Drink Driving
As with most other European countries drink driving is heavily frowned upon in XXXX and the limit is quite low (currently 80mg) at the same level it is in the UK so it’s not worth taking any risks.
